January 2011 - Thesis Paper

Steps to writing a thesis paper:

Brainstorm
Create thesis statement
Decide on which works to use (at least 2)
Use the article "DNA as Destiny"
Create an outline
Create a rough draft with an introduction, body, and conclusion (3-5 pages in length)
Create a Works Cited page
Peer Evaluation
Revised and edited final draft

We will be doing this paper in steps. The due date for each step will be provided in class. Be sure to pay attention to these due dates. The grades for each of these steps of the rough draft will be included on the second marking period. The final draft of the paper, however, will be included on the third marking period. Please see me if you have any questions.

The Week of Nov. 29

This week we will be finishing Oedipus. You will have an end test on the play on Friday, December 3. If you missed any of the reading due to a class absence, you must come see me to sign out a book. Go Michigan!

Oedipus:

We will begin background information for Oedipus on Wednesday. We will meet in the classroom on Wednesday and the library on Thursday and Friday. The reading of Oedipus will be done in class. However, please listen to Ms. Rich for the writing assignments that are to be completed outside of class.

Due Monday, Oct. 25: Book 10 - "Circe"
Due Tuesday, Oct. 26: Book 11 - "The Book of the Dead"
Due Thursday, Oct. 27: Book 12 - "Scylla and Charybdis"
Please pay attention in class for any changes in reading due dates.

The Week of Oct. 18

We will begin The Odyssey this week. Our focus will be on the journey of Odysseus. Therefore, only certain books will be read and discussed as a class. I will fill you in on the books we will not be reading. Enjoy!

Due Tuesday, Oct. 18: Finish Book 1: "Athene Visits Telemachus"
Due Wednesday, Oct. 20: Book 5: "Calypso"
Due Thursday, Oct. 21: Book 9: "Cyclops"

The Week of Oct. 11

We will finish our last myth presentation on Monday, Oct. 11. You should be working on your own origin myth at home. Please read the directions listed below very carefully. This will be due on Wednesday, Oct. 13.

Directions: For this assignment, I would like you to create your own origin myth that explains the beginning of a specific animal characteristic. For example, you may choose to explain why giraffes have long necks, why flamingos stand on one leg, or why turtles have shells. Please name your animal characters and give them lines of dialogue, but do not include gods or goddesses in your story. Please follow all directions and be sure to use the class time appropriately. It is possible to lose accountability points if you are not using the class time wisely. Origin myths will be presented to the class. The entire writing project is worth 20 points.

Rubric:
~Myth is a creative, logical and well-developed explanation of a natural event in today’s world. (10 points)
~Myth includes at least two examples of imagery and three lines of dialogue. (5 Points)
~Myth is at least one entire page long, typed in a Times New Roman size 12 font and double-spaced, and has proper MLA heading. (5 points)
