The Adventures of Ulysses and Exam Review

The Adventures of Ulysses



Finish the novel for Friday, January 17, 2014.   A reading quiz will be given on Wednesday, January 22.  Be prepared to discuss examples of when xenia is violated and examples of when it is followed properly, examples of Ulysses fitting the definition of epic hero (see qualities on the PowerPoint), and review your Divine Intervention handout. 




Exam Review Sheet

There will be five sections to your exam.  The sections are as follows:
  • Vocabulary Terms (Units 1, 2, and 3) – 25 point section
  • Quotes from the films and works we have studied – 15 point section
  • Literary Terms and Poetic Devices – 20 point section
  • MLA Formatting – 10 point section
  • Formal Essay  – The formal essay will have you focus on “Marriage is a Private Affair,” Real Time, and Osama – 30 point section 


Prepare for the exam by:


  • Reviewing the vocabulary terms found in Units 1, 2, and 3 of your vocabulary book.  (This means you should know the definition of each word, the synonyms, the antonyms, and the parts of speech.)
  • Revisiting the works we have studied the first half of the year – “Marriage is a Private Affair,” Real Time, All Quiet on the Western Front, and The Adventures of Ulysses (This means refresh your memory on the plot, characters, and themes of each work.)
  • Revisiting the two films we have viewed the first half of the year – Osama and War Horse.  (This means refresh your memory on the plot, characters, and the connection to the work studied prior to the film being viewed. You were given a viewing guide in class before which watched each film, too. )
  • Reviewing PowerPoints, handouts, and notes which have literary terms and poetic devices on them, author background, etc.
  • Review the sheets the sheets I gave you for your research paper in order to remember the rules of writing formal essays and how to do in-text citations.

January 2014

Rough Draft of Research Paper

Hello 9 Academic Students!  I hope you are enjoying your break.  Just a reminder of what is expected of you before you return on January 2, 2014: 

1.  You must submit the rough copy of your research paper to turnitin.com over the break.  Please read the instructions I gave you before we went on break. 

2.  You must also have a printed copy of your paper and works cited page with you in class on Thursday, January 2.

 Final Draft of Research Paper

Your final draft must be submitted to turnitin.com by Thursday, January 9.  You must also print out a copy of your final draft and Works Cited page to bring to class on Thursday, January 9.

DECEMBER - THE RESEARCH PAPER

The Research Paper

Monday, Dec. 2 and Tuesday, Dec. 3:  Learning about the research paper process and the possible topics for the research paper

Wednesday, Dec. 4 through Tuesday, Dec. 10:  Students are to meet me in the library (Media Wing Section) to set up a noodletools account and a turnitin.com account, review the databases provided by the high school, and to begin research and taking notes.

*Due Date change:  The following items are due by the end of the period Wednesday, Dec. 11:  Notes and Works Cited Page

Thursday, Dec. 12 through Friday, Dec. 20:  Students will be guided through the writing of the rough draft.  Students will meet in the computer lab from Dec. 13 through Dec. 19.

We will start The Effect of War Unit with the novel All Quiet on the Western Front.  Please keep up with the reading assignments.  I will be giving unannounced quizzes to see if you are keeping up with the reading.

Week of October 7 - October 11

ITEMS TO ACCOMPLISH THIS WEEK:
  1. Finish the film Osama and our discussion on why it is important to study literature and films from around the world. 
  2. Vocabulary:  Unit 1  (DO NOT WRITE IN THE VOCABULARY BOOK!  All answers should go on a separate sheet of paper.  You will be responsible for learning these words.)
  3. Diction Assignment 
You will receive a new novel to read next week -- All Quiet on the Western Front.   The only homework this week will involve what we do not finish in class with the vocabulary assignment and diction assignment.  Therefore, listen carefully in class for any homework.
